County Government at a Crossroads
We are at a turning point in county government. Every
year constitutional-related legislation is introduced
that could have a tremendous impact on the basic structure
and functions of Texas county government. Additionally,
we live in a society in which taxpayers are more technologically
sophisticated, more demanding and aware of governmental
services and expect greater accountability from their
government than ever before in our history. Recent events
in this country have heightened the response expectations
from local government to an even greater degree.
So how do we as county officials learn
to deal with current issues, to think ahead and prepare
for the future, and most importantly, exert influence
over the inevitable evolution of county government?
