Workers' Compensation

Overview
TAC's Risk Management Pool is the Association's largest self-insurance pool. The Fund offers counties and county-related entities the opportunity to jointly self-insure in order to cover the costs of workers' compensation claims and on-the-job injuries.

Through the years our members have seen significant savings through discounts off standard premiums. View the Workers' Compensation Coverage Summary.

Latest News: Increased Benefits Now Available for Volunteers
Income benefits of $80 per week do not come close to replacing the wages lost by volunteers who are unable to perform their regular paying job if they become injured or lose their lives while volunteering on behalf of the county. The inadequacy of the minimum indemnity payments permitted by workers’ compensation law was recently brought into sharp focus when three volunteer fire fighters lost their lives while fighting a fire in a small rural city. Two of the volunteers were off-duty Fort Worth fire fighters and the third was a volunteer employed by another central Texas city fire department. Since these men died while working in a volunteer status, their families will only receive the minimum indemnity payment in effect at that time — $78 per week!

The Texas Labor Code permits political subdivisions to cover volunteer fire fighters, police officers, emergency medical personnel and other volunteers that are specifically named.

Using the scale below, members can decide how much coverage they want to provide for their volunteers. There is, of course, a cost for the additional coverage and that cost will be based on the level of benefit selected. It should be remembered that providing this increased coverage is strictly optional — as is providing any workers’ compensation coverage to volunteers.

If you are interested in learning more about the cost and availability of coverage for volunteers, please call your workers’ compensation service representative at 800- 456-5974 and speak to Cynthia Brannen or Chris Shaw. Also visit the calculator tool to further help you determine your coverage cost for volunteers.
