An Opportunity to Explain How Counties Work
Choose from the various approaches on the menu to the left
Explaining how your county fits into the big governmental picture can be a full-time job, but across America counties are focusing on County Government Week (most recently held May 3-9, 2009) to show local citizens how counties serve the public.
In conjunction with the V.G. Young Institute of County Government at Texas A&M University, the Texas Association of Counties encourages its members to make a concerted effort to use this event to educate your neighbors and constituents about what your county does for them.
We’ve identified several approaches that your county can use to get people actively involved at the courthouse and, in the process, learn about county government. You’re welcome to “pick and choose” from among the activities we’ve suggested to customize your efforts to meet your county’s needs.
In addition, TAC and V.G. Young recently established a new Web site, www.TexasCounties4U.org, that includes:
- explanatory videos about how to access county government services;
- detailed descriptions of county government offices;
- a 16-minute video explaining Texas counties;
- county maps;
- demographic profiles of counties; and
- an easy-to-use locator tool for finding local county Web sites.
Remember, the purpose of County Government Week is to involve people in the county government process so that they are informed on what county government is all about.
