Overview: This session will discuss proposed legislative recommendations concerning indigent defense for the 80th Legislation as well as review results of a major study conducted with public policy researchers from Texas A&M University on the impact of direct electronic filing in misdemeanor criminal cases and preview a current study on "Determining Indigence and the Cost-Effectiveness of Financial Verification."

Overview: The 79th Legislature charged an Indigent Health Care Advisory Committee to recommend options for a pilot program to regionalize responses to indigent health care needs. This panel will discuss the work of the Advisory Committee.

4.6.96 Fees & Revenues: County Revenues in Crisis

Overview: Property taxes have been a major issue in recent sessions of the Texas Legislature an anti-tax groups and the public at large focus attention on this primary source of county revenue. Initiatives in Texas to cap property appraisals and revenue are part od a national movement to establish additional tax and expenditure limits (TELs) on local and state government. How does Texas compare to other states with these measurers in place? What are other options available in other states to fund local government?
