Texas Association of Counties
PREPARING TO TAKE OFFICE:
A prep school for newly elected officials
Congratulations!!
You won and on January 1, you become a county official. Now what?
In those few weeks between election day and taking oath of office, most newly elected officials are planning what they will do when they finally get the keys to their new office. The Texas Association of Counties is here to help you.
“Preparing to Take Office” is a one day workshop that explains some very important basic issues that are common to all county officials.
There are many rigid, yet unfamiliar statutes and rules you must follow even before officially taking office. This meeting will identify common, unintentional errors that often result in embarrassing lawsuits at the taxpayers expense. By avoiding some very common pitfalls, you may promptly get to the business at hand … confidently and without controversy.
A faculty of experienced county officials, Association staff and other specialists will address several common problems that are particularly dangerous for new officials. Our goal is to make you comfortable in your new position by understanding the laws pertaining to your office. This includes how to deal with employees as well as the public and the importance of your relationship with other officials and organizations representing elected officials.
We will also provide information about training for your specific office. We want every new official to have their “burning” questions answered before leaving.
As a non-profit corporation owned and operated by counties, our purpose at the Texas Association of Counties is to help our members with the challenges of public office. Join us for this informative, one-day training held at eight different locations around the state.
