Thank you for your interest in CIO Level I. Our 2007 class is full. Please check back in 2008 for next year's CIO Level I training.
Overview
CIO Level I is an introductory course providing comprehensive, in-depth investment education involving approximately 35 hours of classroom instruction. After attending classroom instruction, optional examination is offered for those wishing to obtain the CIO credential. If you have questions, please call TAC at (800) 456-5974.
What is a CIO?
“CIO” stands for certified County Investment Officer.
Why is CIO training valuable?
County officials who attend TAC’s CIO training are better prepared to manage public funds because they stay constantly updated on the latest laws and strategies. Graduates of these courses are in a better position to maximize their investment returns and minimize their losses – a definite plus in today’s uncertain economy. Also, those who attend CIO courses have the option of earning a CIO certification credential.
What is involved in CIO certification?
Initially, students receive 35 hours of intensive classroom instruction over a weeklong period. Class size is limited to 25 to provide more one-on-one help. Courses are taught by qualified speakers, and the certification program meets the requirements established by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies for Approval of Certification Programs. To receive CIO certification, students must successfully complete the weeklong Level I course and pass an examination at the end of the course.
Who should attend CIO classes?
Any county official can attend TAC’s CIO training courses. However, those who oversee public investments – such as auditors, commissioners’ court members, county investment officers and treasurers – are especially encouraged to participate.
When are CIO classes offered?
CIO Level I class is an introductory, week long course leading to certification. It is usually offered in the beginning of October annually.
After completing CIO Level I and successfully passing the exam, you are a CIO and may meet annual CIO continuing education requirements by attending CIO Level II, which is held annually in June and is restricted to those who attended CIO Level I. Also, up to 10 hours of CIO continuing education credits are available at the Texas Public Funds Investment Conference, which is open to all and held each November in Houston. Some CIOs are also allowed to submit additional education opportunities for individual outside credit approval.
