Enhancing Criminal Case flow through Direct Electronic Filing

In July 2006, a study was released documenting the impacts of electronic information systems on criminal case filing in three Texas counties.  Results found that, while more comprehensive integrated information systems are better, significant efficiencies can be gained from relatively simple systems expediting communication between law enforcement, prosecutors, and court clerks around the time of arrest.  The study found that where this technology is in place, as many as 19% of criminal cases may be reviewed and cleared before book-in at jail, and up to 25 percent of cases can be disposed within three days of arrest.
