Overview
The New Judges Orientation is a great opportunity for newly-elected judges to meet their peers and other professionals in judicial education. New judges will become acquainted with and proficient in conducting trials and other courtroom procedures along with managing court dockets, handling court records, maintaining decorum in the courtroom, and deciding family violence cases.
Objectives
After attending this program, judges will:
Be able to handle a criminal case from arraignment through pre-trial matters
(bench or jury trials) and post trial matters, including appeal and revocation
of probation, and better understand the legal research material available
in the law library, on the Internet and in the Bench Book:
Understand and be confident in handling civel, juvenile, probate and mental
health issues before the court;
Recognize the leadership role of the county judge in and out of the
courtroom; and
Fully understand and comply with the code of Judicial Conduct.
Judicial Education Credit
The New Judges Orientation provides 30 Judicial Education credit hours for constitutional county Judges. Application is pending with the State Bar to determine MCLE credit for attorneys.
Reimbursement
This program is partially funded by a Judicial & Court Personnel Training Fund Grant administered by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. County Judges may be reimbursed at state approved rates for allowable travel, lodging and meals expenses for one Judicial Academy session or one Texas College of Probate Judges Session each state fiscal year (September 1-August 31).
Who Should Attend?
All county judges with judicial duties who were elected in the 2006 general election, and any judges elected or appointed since January 2003.
