Interpersonal Communications
In the Correctional Setting
Presented by the Texas Association of Counties in conjunction with the Texas Jail Association
Educational Co-Sponsor:
Correctional Management Institute of Texas as Sam Houston State University
Course Description
In this two-day course which is a requirement for intermediate TCLEOSE certification, we will provide an opportunity for you to try out new ways of handling inmates, reconstructing their attitudes and contributing to an eventual successful adjustment in the institution and on the street. Since 97% of our daily contact time is spent talking to people, the need to learn good communications skills is vital. These skills will also help in getting compliance without escalation to the use of force. By learning these skills you will also increase safety, decrease complaints and liability, enhance professionalism, and lower stress levels. This course identifies common problem situations and gives you the practical solutions.
Objectives
After completing this course, participants will be
able to:
-
Identify and explain the purposes of these communication models and analyze potential uses in managing inmates.
-
Explain the progressive components and related elements of effective communications and the relationships of each of these components.
-
Explain the cognitive foundation and associated skills for managing offenders behavior.
-
Discuss and demonstrate the complete use of the communication skills presented.
Continuing Education
**IMPORTANT**
TCLEOSE anticipates that by the end of fall 2006, Social Security Numbers will no longer be accepted to submit TCLEOSE hours for training. PID numbers will be used instead. Every person who has a TCLEOSE license is issued a PID number, if you do not have a PID number call TCLEOSE at (512) 936-7700, the "Credentialing Department".
Once TCLEOSE stops accepting Social Security Numbers we will NOT be able to submit your continuing education hours without your PID number.
Who Should Attend?
