2008 Loss Control Regional Workshops

Presented by the Texas Association of Counties

Educational Co-Sponsor: Correctional Management Institute of Texas, George J. Beto Criminal Justice Center, Sam Houston State University

Overview

An effective safety program for any organization usually includes the eight program elements that will be covered in this workshop. These elements provide a framework for the basic activities involved in a solid safety effort, as well as outlining the “who, what, when, where and how” of safety and health activities. This interactive workshop will focus on solving worker safety problems and obtain management buy-in to the administrative elements of the program.

8. Return to Work Component

Objectives
Upon completion of this class the participants should be able to:

  • list activities that indicate management commitment to safety in the workplace
  • identify at least four sources of records/information needed to target safety program needs
  • identify trends and safety program needs through a spreadsheet analysis of claims data
  • indicate the main purpose of accident investigations
  • recognize the underlying causes of behaviors which lead to accidents
  • formulate a planned safety training program for their organization
  • recognize a comprehensive safety inspection program
  • revise an accident prevention plan, based on a review of activities and results
  • describe the basic requirements for reporting new workers' comp injuries and deadlines in order to meet to avoid costly penalties and to get the investigation started
  • to access and use the Political Subdivision Workers' Compensation Alliance (PSWCA) for employee care
  • list the major regulatory requirements for workers’ safety and health issues as they apply to Texas counties
  • describe the components and communication processes in an effective “return to work” program

Desired Outcome 
Participants will use information in the workshop to enhance their safety program efforts.
