Overview
“Preparing to Take Office” is a one-day workshop that explains some very important basic laws that apply to all county officials.
A faculty of experienced county officials, TAC staff and other specialists will address several common problems that are particularly dangerous for new officials. Our goal is to make you comfortable in your new position by understanding the laws pertaining to your office. Additionally the program includes sessions on how to deal with employees as well as the public, and the importance of your relationships with other officials and organizations representing elected officials.
Objectives
By the end of this program, participants will improve their understanding of:
- The legal requirements regarding a number of employment related issues including hiring, firing, nepotism, Fair Labor Standards Act, and at will employment.
- The Texas Open Meetings and Public Information Acts and their impact on counties.
- Purchasing requirements and Ethics for county officials
- Positive techniques for building alliances and effectively working in the courthouse and the Legislature.
- The ways that the Texas Association of Counties can be of assistance to you while in office
Who Should Attend?
All newly elected officials and those new to their office as of January 2009.
Judges, Commissioners, Tax Assessor-Collectors, Treasurers, County Clerks, District Clerks, County/District Clerks, Constables, Justice of the Peace, Sheriffs, Attorneys
