Educational Co-Sponsor: Correctional Management Institute of Texas, George J. Beto Criminal Justice Center, Sam Houston State University

Course Description

In this two-day course, we will cover the evolution of correctional case law in order to understand the present context of prisoner rights and the courts’ role in protecting those rights. We will discuss civil liability issues and various state and federal remedies available to inmates.

There will also be a review of inmate rights in consideration of the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution. This course is required for intermediate TCLEOSE certification.

  • Have a basic understanding of the rights and privileges afforded by law to those incarcerated;
  • Increased their effectiveness though knowledge of the allowances and requirements in the law as it applies to running jails;
  • Receive material upon which to develop operational policy and procedures.
  • Understand how to take appropriate preventative or remedial action to protect against potential civil liability;
