Overview
The spring session addresses certain juvenile, probate, criminal, civil, social net working, web based legal research, recusal, bail bond collections and topics updated by the 82nd Legislature.
Learning Outcomes
Judges who successfully complete this program will become acquainted with:
- How to prepare and submit civil and criminal jury charges
- Probable cause for stop and search, and admissibility of DWI evidence
- “Achieve,” a web-based financial, career and life skills training for probationers
- How to use online legal resources
- The impact of federal immigration laws of our criminal justice systems
- How social networking is affecting certain aspects of our judicial duties
- Recent ethics opinions relating to judicial duties
- Requirements for proper issuance and return of evidentiary search warrants
- Self recusal, motions to recuse and transfers to Statutory Probate and District Court
- How to forfeit and collect criminal appearance bonds
- Changes affecting the judiciary coming from the 82nd legislature
Judicial Education Credit
Each Spring and Fall Judicial Education session provides 16 hours of judicial education credit for constitutional county judges. Application is pending with the State Bar of Texas to determine the MCLE credit for attorneys.
Reimbursement
This program is partially funded by a Judicial and Court Personnel Training Fund Grant administered by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. Judges may be reimbursed for attendance at ONE Texas Judicial Academy session (spring or fall) or Texas College of Probate School session per fiscal year. Reimbursement will cover grant-allowable meals, lodging, and transportation. (Air travel reimbursement will be paid from hub airports only. Those include Dallas Love, DFW, Amarillo, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, Harlingen, Corpus Christi, Houston Hobby, Houston International, Austin and El Paso.)
