THERE IS WORK TO BE DONE
Now is the time to come together with your colleagues to exchange insights as we prepare for the challenges of the impending legislative session. The 2012 Pre-Legislative conference will help you shape and protect your county’s future by preparing you to participate in the 83rd legislative session. It is an opportunity to investigate key legislative issues and learn how to collaborate with your legislators to serve the citizens in your county.

The conference is a chance to be proactive and a time to understand and prepare for what’s to come. Conference sessions will cover information on the House and Senate interim charges, the nuts and bolts of the legislative process, significant issues on the horizon, effective communication techniques, and how the economic climate could impact the legislative session.

Opening Keynote Speaker

Stuart Brody, attorney and adjunct professor of ethics at State University of New York at New Paltz, has been named the keynote speaker for the 2012 Pre-Legislative Conference.

Brody’s professional work centers on developing principles by which ethical judgment can be taught and practiced. He draws from more than 30 years as a former political leader in New York, advisor to presidential candidates and business strategist for private industry. He lectures widely to municipal organizations and civic groups and consults with private business corporations on ethics and integrity training.

Brody will examine the fundamentals of public integrity, a far broader concept than ethical compliance, and a practice upon which true leadership is built. During the keynote session, he will examine common misconceptions about integrity: for instance, that doing the “right thing” is usually a clear decision and that the talent for doing so is innate. Brody will demonstrate that acting with integrity is a methodology of deliberate decision making — a practice involving distinct skills that must be systematically developed in order to be effective.

Brody is president of Integrity Intensive. He maintains a blog on integrity issues published periodically on New York State’s Empire Page and comments occasionally on Fox Business Network.
