By Rick Thompson

In a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) report from the Task Force on Texas’ Energy Sector Roadway Needs, recommendations were made to make improvements in important areas of transportation such as safety, innovation and prevention, public awareness and funding.

In March 2012, TxDOT created the Task Force on Texas’ Energy Sector Roadway Needs, made up of representatives from state agencies, local governments and the energy industry, to “address the impact on the state's infrastructure of increased energy exploration and production.”  The task force, which included Dewitt County Judge Daryl Fowler and Johnson County Judge Roger Harmon, issued important recommendations in many aspects of transportation, including recommendations to enhance penalties for oversize/overweight vehicle violations, dedicate severance taxes from royalties to their counties of origin, and authorize certain county mineral rights.
