CIESIN specializes in global and regional net work development, science data management, decision support, and training, education and technical consultation services.

Environmental Quality Home Page  Brought to you by the Environmental Protection Agency, this is the place to check out how your county is doing on environmental issues.

EPA ZIP Code Search  Locate pollution, waste sites, regulated sites, environmental conditions for your watershed, etc. Just enter a zip code, select the type of information you are searching for and then submit the form. A map will be returned showing the information you have requested.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)  The federal agency charged with building and supporting the nation's emergency management system. This is the main page of their web site.

FEMA Map Service Center  The Map Service Center (MSC) distributes National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) materials to a broad range of customers, including Federal, State, and local government officials; real estate professionals; insurance providers; appraisers; builders; land developers; design engineers; surveyors; lenders; and the public.

FEMA Flood Hazard Mapping - DFIRM  Information about the draft Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) Spatial Database.

Federal Brownfields Resources  Links to information on Brownfields from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. A brownfield is a site that has actual or perceived contamination and an active potential for redevelopment or reuse.

National Climatic Data Center  Historical weather information with most of the data or publications for sale, but some free information.

Local Government Environmental Assistance Network  The Local Government Environmental Assistance Network is a forum and clearinghouse of environmental information for local government. It provides 24-hour access to regulatory and pollution prevention information, message boards, regulatory updates, grants and financing information, and much more.

Office of the State Climatologist  OSC retains a large data base covering Texas and southern states and, as well as publishing regular reports and monographs, undertakes research on climate patterns and applied meteorology.

US EPA Publications On-line documents from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) including brownfield issues.

State, Local, and Tribal Environmental Networks  State and local topical listing of information resources and links. From the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Surf Your Watershed  This page is from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). You can click on a map of Texas to find out information about your watershed and find out about the water quality within that watershed.

TCEQ Home Page  The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is the lead environmental agency for the state.

Texas Colonia Project  The Texas Water Development Board maintains this site. You can locate counties with colonias on a map of Texas and then link to individual county maps which show the locations of the colonias within the county or review a table full of data about the county's colonias.

Texas Environmental Profiles  County profiles are available on this site with values, state rankings, and links for over 50 indicators of environmental quality.

The Texas Natural Resources Information System (TNRIS)  The Texas Natural Resources Information System (TNRIS) is the state's clearinghouse and referral center for natural resources data. Its primary purpose is to make data available to data users quickly and reliably.

Texas Water Development Board  The Texas Water Development Board's (TWDB) mission is to provide leadership, technical services and financial assistance to support planning, conservation and responsible development of water for the State of Texas.

Texas Waternet  A service of the Texas Water Resources Institute at Texas A & M University. Search the subject index for publications or locate a link. You can also access their database of researchers from Texas universities with expertise in water related issues.

University of Texas

Bureau of Economic Geology  A contract based research unit of the University of Texas.

Dr. Maidment's Research   Professor of Civil Engineering, University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Maidment has an entire section on Applications to Texas. His research seems to focused primarily on water and hydrology.

  • Digital Atlas of the World Water Balance  Version 1.0, May 1997. A first attempt at creating an integrated set of data files and models in GIS format that can be used to characterize the planet's water balance.
  • Spacial Water Balance of Texas  A study published by the University of Texas with the stated purpose of gaining an improved understanding of the stocks of water in different components (air, soil, water bodies) of the hydrologic cycle and the fluxes between these components.

GISHydro97  Collection of exercises, data, reports and information designed to support the use of Geographic Information Systems in Hydrology and Water Resources. The materials presented here come from the Center for Research in Water Resources and the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Texas, the Engineering Computer Graphics Laboratory of Brigham Young University, and the Applications Programming Group at Environmental Systems Research, Inc.
