Grant Opportunity for Propane Vehicles

The Railroad Commission asked TAC to relay the following message regarding grants for propane vehicles. There are some documents that must be filled out if you want to participate.

The catch: The deadline for contacting the RRC is Oct. 12.

Here is the RRC message:

Dear Friend:

As commissioner of the state’s chief energy agency, the Texas Railroad Commission, I invite you to partner with our agency on a grant proposal that will help Texans breathe cleaner air and help your taxpayers breathe a little easier, too.

Our grant proposal to the State Energy Conservation Office (SECO) will help state and local public agencies and public school districts purchase new, ultra-low-emission propane vehicles, including school buses, and upgrade their existing propane refueling stations. If awarded, the SECO grant may be used to pay for up to:

1) 80 percent of the incremental cost of dedicated propane vehicles;
2) 100 percent of the cost of dedicated propane conversions; and
3) 80 percent of the cost of upgrading existing refueling infrastructure.

The grant is limited to $4,000 per vehicle for light- and medium-duty vehicles and $8,000 per vehicle for heavy-duty vehicles.

If you are a school district or transit agency, you may also be eligible for additional funding from the Railroad Commission’s Texas Emissions Reduction Program-funded propane vehicle program, which can pay up to $30,000 of your matching funds for new buses and vans that replace older diesel buses and vans in air-quality non-attainment areas.

A public fleet may apply on its own for these federal grants; however, many agencies in Texas prefer that the Railroad Commission apply on their behalf as part of a statewide proposal. If you are interested in participating in the proposal, please complete the attached commitment letters and fleet description spreadsheet and return them to Heather Ball in our Alternative Fuels Division.

The deadline is short for this grant. To participate, please respond by close of business Monday, Oct. 12. I will be hosting information sessions about the grant as listed below.

For more information, please contact Heather Ball at (512) 463-7359 or heather.ball@rrc.state.tx.us.

Sincerely,

Michael Williams
Commissioner, Railroad Commission of Texas
