The 2008 TAC Salary Survey

By Tim Brown
Senior Analyst, County Information Project

The Texas Association of Counties is conducting the salary survey at this time. Originally conducted in even numbered years, the 2002 survey suffered from some defects as a result of which the survey was conducted again in 2003. TAC is now taking the opportunity to return to the even numbered in order to get back on non-session years.

The information collected in this survey and published is made available for free to the counties. Generally TAC provides two hard copies to each county; one goes to the office completing the survey and one goes to the county judge. There are a few hard copies of the 2007 Salary Survey still available (contact Melissa Dota at 800-456-5974). The 2007 Salary Survey is also available in PDF format on the TAC web site (www.county.org/ resources/countydata/financl.asp). Once the 2008 Salary Survey is completed it will also be available at the same location.

Letters were sent around the 6th of March requesting salary information on all elected county officials and the county auditors. As of March 25, 147 surveys have been returned and a second letter is about to be sent to the remaining counties to remind them of the March 31, 2008 due date.

Because the salary information is so useful to county officials, followup letters will be sent and phone calls from TAC staff will be made until at least 240 surveys are returned to TAC. As a result, the publication date for the survey is tentatively scheduled for late May. A copy of the 2008 survey form is available in MS Excel format www.county.org/resources/countydata/documents/surveys/salary2008/SalarySurvey2008.xls. Be sure to save it to your local computer or network before adding data!
