Texas History News you can use

City-County Cooperation Award Submissions Due in April

TAC, in conjunction with the Texas Municipal League (TML), is honoring collaboration between cities and counties who have worked together to meet the challenges facing local governments.

Previous winners of the City-County Cooperation Award program include Wise County with the cities of Bridgeport and Decatur for their combined effort to bring a branch of Weatherford College to Wise County; Dallas County and the city of Irving for working together to launch the Irving Health Center; Titus County and the city of Mount Pleasant for their effort to build a traffic loop around the city; and Williamson County and the cities of Cedar Park, Hutto, Leander and Round Rock for their regional animal shelter. One nomination can be submitted for each city-county project. Entries must describe programs or projects brought to conclusion or showing significant results between Nov. 1, 2008 and April 30, 2010.

The deadline to apply for the award is 5 p.m. on Friday, April 30. Five copies of a printed document outlining the program (there is no actual application document) should be mailed to the Texas Municipal League headquarters at:

The document should include the names and populations of the city and the county, the title of the project, signatures and printed names of the chief city and county officials, and a contact person’s name, title, phone number and email address. Descriptions of the programs should be 1,200 words or less and address:

  • Why was the project needed?
  • How did the project accomplish its goal(s)?
  • Who benefited from the project?
  • What was the level of cooperation between the city and county?
  • What time and/or money were saved as a result of the project?
  • What time and/or money were spent on the project?
  • How has the project improved the quality of service and/or livability of the community?
  • What future impact will the project have on the community?

Email and fax applications will not be accepted. Also entries, including additional material, will not be returned.

All winning applicants will be notified on or before June 18.
