An impactful wellness program in a county or district is largely dependent upon the program’s structure and employee involvement. To remain successful, counties and districts should set goals to achieve: (a) an active wellness program; and (b) employee engagement.
Participants in this session will learn from a panel combined with roundtable discussions to:
- Understand how successful counties are engaging employees;
- Learn how to create internal contests using the Sonic Boom portal; and
- Learn how to motivate employees both intrinsically and extrinsically.
Give it a Rest!: How Adequate Sleep Strengthens Mind, Body and Soul

A good night's rest is an often overlooked and underrated aspect of one’s physical, mental and emotional health. This session explains the importance of sufficient sleep for overall wellbeing.
Participants in this session will be able to:
- Understand how sleep impacts the body and brain;
- Identify their recommended number of hours of sleep; and
- Learn proper sleep hygiene methods.

- Discover how the mind and body affect each other in the context of resilience and mental and physical wellbeing; and
- Learn at least two ways to build or enhance your own resilience, and that of your county employees.

- Identify the recommendations of the Presidential Task Force’s 21st Century Strategic Recommendations for Policing: 6th Pillar on Officer Wellness and Safety;
- Discuss how physical fitness and nutrition impact overall health for officers and the relationship to the number one goal in law enforcement: to go home after each shift;
- Understand and recognize the impact of physical fitness, nutrition and health on command presence, de-escalation, use of force and officer safety; and
- Review nutrition, resilience and exercise tactics that can help combat the challenges of the dynamic and unpredictable environment of law enforcement.

Making Lasting Changes in Your Life
Speaker: Vance Hinds, Author and Attorney in the Civil Division of the Dallas County District Attorney's Office
A video of Vance’s incredible 198-pound weight loss in 365 days without surgery or medication received more than 75 million views on YouTube in 2018. The video only shows what happened during that one-year weight loss journey, but what occurred before and after the video is more incredible. Vance went from spending five days in the ICU not expected to live to completing 20 triathlon events. Vance made a drastic change to his life and wants to share how those changes can help improve your health and quality of life.
Attendees will learn about:
- Two guiding principles that drastically changed Vance’s life;
- Vance’s philosophies on diet, exercise, and weight loss; and
- How to incorporate small changes in your life that will snowball into drastic, long-lasting positive results.
