Effective September 1, 2020, the civil jurisdiction limit (amount in controversy) for justice courts has increased from $10,000 to $20,000. The amount in controversy is determined by the plaintiff’s petition at the time the suit is filed. The increase in limit is due to the passage of Senate Bill 2342 by Sen. Brandon Creighton (R-Woodlands) during the 86th legislative session.
More information on the jurisdictional increase and an educational webinar can be found on the Texas Justice Court Training Center’s website.
