Nearly 1.3 million Texans cast votes on May 7 to decide the fate of two state constitutional amendments. The measures, Propositions 1 and 2, were passed by the Legislature in special session last year to build on prior efforts to deliver property tax relief. Both passed by wide margins and take immediate effect.

Proposition 1 delivers relief on school property taxes for homeowners who are disabled or 65 years and older. Proposition 2 increases the homestead exemption for school property taxes from $25,000 to $40,000 of a home's appraised value. The resulting revenue reductions will not negatively impact school districts, as the state will make offsetting appropriations.
