More than ever before, the complex demands of modern society are resting on Texas' 254 counties. As more and more federal and state responsibilities are delegated or mandated to the local level, counties have met these demands, delivering a growing list of services while keeping local property taxes as low as possible by working "smarter and harder" to respond to the ever-changing needs of our dynamic state.
Generally, Texas counties provide the essential things that make our communities livable: roads and bridges, law enforcement and corrections, a court system to protect our legal rights, secure storage of our important public records and protection against threats to public health. Some counties are able to offer libraries, parks and other programs that add to the quality of life for local residents.
The Texas Counties Deliver public information campaign aims to improve the public’s understanding of county government and the essential services it provides Texans. See Texas Counties Deliver.
