Episode 16: Hurricane Harvey, Five Years On

Hurricane Harvey made landfall on Aug. 25, 2017, causing massive damage in Aransas and many other Texas counties. Harvey was historic in every sense – it dropped 60 inches of rain, blew in winds of up to 130 miles per hour and caused $125 billion in damages, the bulk affecting Texas.

In this episode of Texas County Voice, we recognize the five-year anniversary of the storm and the resilience of our members as they rebuild. We visit with Texas Association of Counties' Risk Management Services Associate Director Robert Ruiz who was one of the first members of the TAC staff to visit counties in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. He walks us through the damage our members sustained, as well as lessons learned and proper disaster preparedness.

This episode pairs with the release of County magazine’s cover story, which takes an in-depth look at Aransas County’s recovery over the past five years. Download the latest issue here.
