"We received a PIA request for copies of a large amount of records. It’s going to take my team a while to produce so many. Can we require the requestor to put down a deposit?"

When can a county require a deposit or bond for copies requested under the Public Information Act?

A county with 16 or more full-time employees may require a deposit or bond for payment if the estimated charge for copies exceeds $100. A county with fewer than 16 full-time employees may require a deposit or bond if the estimated charge exceeds $50. See Government Code §552.263(a).
