AUSTIN — When a veteran experiencing auditory hallucinations asked licensed clinical social worker Crystal Williams to put away her phone and computer because he feared the FBI was listening, she didn’t argue.

Williams took her phone back to her car and took notes by hand.

The moment illustrates the approach that drives the new Galveston County Mental Health Wellness Center: Meet people where they are.

The center, which opened in April, is the focus of the latest Texas County Storytellers feature from the Texas Association of Counties. The series shares stories about county programs and the people who make them work.

The Galveston County story unfolds across several TAC platforms:

    • County magazine explores the vision and collaboration behind the center’s creation.
    • The TAC Blog looks at how mental health training is helping sheriff’s deputies connect people with treatment instead of jail when possible.
    • A Texas County Voice podcast episode takes listeners inside the center to learn about its mission, services and community impact.
    • A video tells the story of why the center was needed and how local partners brought it to life.

Texas counties deliver essential services every day, often outside the public spotlight. Texas County Storytellers highlights the people and partnerships behind the local solutions that strengthen communities across the state’s 254 counties.
