Women’s History Month Spotlight: Denton County Clerk Juli Luke

Public service has long been a calling for Denton County Clerk Juli Luke. For Luke, the motivation to serve her community is rooted in both personal values and a desire to make government work better for the people it serves.

“Public service has always been just a passion of mine,” Luke said. “I like helping people and making the community better.”

Before becoming county clerk, Luke worked in a school district and later joined the Denton County Clerk’s Office. While working there, she saw opportunities to improve processes and better serve residents. Instead of simply recognizing the challenges, she decided to act.

“As an example to my daughters, I’ve always said when you see a problem, don’t complain about it. Fix it. Do something about it,” Luke said. “So, I chose to run for county clerk to make those positive changes and better serve the public.”

As county clerk, Luke oversees a wide range of responsibilities that touch the lives of Denton County residents every day. Her office maintains county records, supports several county courts, records Commissioners Court minutes, and manages vital records including birth, death and marriage certificates. The office also processes passport applications and provides access to land and court records.

One of Luke’s proudest accomplishments has been preserving Denton County’s historical records. She has prioritized protecting archival materials and ensuring they remain accessible for generations to come.

“If we don’t take those steps now to preserve it, we can’t regain it,” Luke said.

Her office also focuses on improving customer service and accessibility through expanded online services, allowing residents to request records remotely and access important information more easily. They have also implemented property fraud alerts to help protect residents.

Luke says she’s inspired by strong women in Texas leadership. She points to Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson as a major influence in her own journey in public service.

“Jane Nelson just exemplifies such grace and strength and a driving desire to make the state and the counties better,” Luke said.

Luke believes strongly in the importance of women serving in leadership roles throughout county government.

“Women are 50 percent of the population. We have to have representation just as men do,” she said. “It’s very positive to have both male and female perspectives in local government, state government and at the federal level to best serve everybody’s interests.”

For young women interested in public service, Luke encourages them to focus on purpose.

“Find your why,” she said. “Define where you want to go and chart your path.”
