Counties Help Keep Texas Safe This Fourth of July

The Fourth of July is a time for parades, community celebrations, backyard barbecues and fireworks. Behind many of these traditions are county officials and employees working throughout the holiday to help keep Texans safe.

"Holidays like the Fourth of July are a time to celebrate with family and friends, but they also come with increased risks on our roads and in our neighborhoods," said El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte. "Our deputies will be out working throughout the holiday weekend, but public safety is a shared responsibility. If everyone does their part, we can make sure this holiday is remembered for the right reasons."

Across Texas, county law enforcement officers, emergency management teams, firefighters, EMS personnel and public works crews work around the clock to respond to emergencies, manage traffic and support community celebrations. County judges and commissioners courts also help reduce wildfire risks by regulating fireworks during periods of drought.

When drought conditions exist, Texas law allows commissioners courts to temporarily restrict certain types of fireworks in unincorporated areas to help prevent dangerous grass and brush fires. They may also designate safe areas where restricted fireworks can be used when adequate fire protection is available.

"We’re asking everyone to help us by making responsible choices," Ugarte said. “Whether that's designating a sober driver, using fireworks safely, staying hydrated, or keeping a close eye on children.”

This Independence Day, thank you to the county officials, first responders and public servants who work behind the scenes to keep Texas communities safe.
